How to Declutter & Organize Your Bathroom

When SortJoy offered me the opportunity to take over their Instagram account for a day, I jumped at the opportunity to discuss how to declutter and organize bathrooms. Why?

We often start and end our days in the bathroom, so it’s important to keep this area decluttered and organized. That being said, the average bathroom contains far more products than most people need or use, so it’s an easy place to practice the art of decluttering.

How to Organize Any Room in Your Home

Whether you’re hoping to declutter and organize your bathroom, closet, pantry or any other area, use the acronym SPACE to remember the correct order of operation.

S = sort

P = purge

A = assign remaining contents a home and…

C = container

E = execute, ENJOY and evaluate

Step 1: Sort

Take everything out (yes, I mean everything) and begin to group products by type. Skincare together. Hair products together. Makeup in one area. Shaving tools together. Oral products together and so forth.

Step 2: Purge

General rules of thumb for knowing what to declutter in the bathroom are:

  • Anything expired
  • Anything you don’t use
  • Anything that doesn’t make you feel your best (think lotions that smell weird, face serums that make your skin feel sticky, etc.)

Step 3: Assign Remaining Contents a Home

After you’ve decluttered your bathroom, it’s time to assign the remaining contents a home. Whenever possible, group “like with like” and assign just one home for each grouping of items. If you’re a big Costco shopper and tend to have a lot of back stock (and please, only be this person if you have the room to store it), then you’re allowed to have a back stock drawer or area.

The smaller your area, the more creative (and frankly minimalist) you must be. And I speak from experience. I live in 900 square feet with another human and a dog, without a garage or even a coat closet. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), our space doesn’t afford us the luxury of buying in bulk and we have to be very thoughtful about what stays inside our home.

When it comes to figuring out what to put where, consider how often you use all the products. The more frequent you use something, the easier it should be to retrieve. My top drawer houses all of my twice-daily used products (toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, hair ties, and cotton swabs). For backstock and bottles of things I only use occasionally, I store them under the sink, grouped together in categories.

Step 4: Container

Now that you’ve decluttered and organized the bathroom, you’ll need to determine an appropriate container for what’s left over. Not everything needs a container, however containers can be super helpful in keeping things grouped together, and very effective in keeping your drawers looking tidy and beautiful.

Some of my favorite containers for the bathroom include:

Step 5: Execute, Enjoy and Evaluate

This last step is when you get to put it all into action. Once you’ve fully sorted, purged, and assigned the remaining contents a home and container, you’re going to enjoy your newly organized space. Round of applause! After living with the new set up for a few weeks, check back in to see how everything is working for you. Evaluate and adjust as necessary.
